Craps Glossary Terms

The Game of Craps

The terms below are to provided to help you understand and enjoy the game of craps better, there may be terms we have overlooked however, feel free to contact us with any known omissions or corrections you may like to contribute.

Advantage

This commonly refers to the edge (house edge) a casino has over a player on a given bet.

Any Craps

This is a one roll bet that the next roll will be either 2, 3, or 12.

Any Seven

This is a one roll bet that the next roll will be a 7.

Betting Right

A bet that the dice will win on pass line and come bets.

Betting Wrong

A bet placed on don't pass line and don't come line is a bet that the dice won't win or pass.

Bet

An action a player takes pursuant to the rules of the game in which he places money in the pot so as to maintain a chance of winnning that pot.

Big 6

This is a bet that a 6 will be rolled before a 7 and pays even money.

Big 8

This is a bet that a 8 will be rolled before a 7 and pays even money.

Box Numbers

The numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 are call box numbers because they are in the boxes on the craps layout. The dealer will mark the point with a puck placed in the box on the table.

Box Cars

Two sixes (a roll of 12).

Boxman

The craps table supervisor who is seated behind the casino chips during play.

Bring Out

A term used by the stickman exhorting players to make certain bets in order to have the point come up on the dice.

Buy Bets

A 5% commission is given to the house in order to be paid correct odds for a place bet. The buy bets on 4 and 10 allow the player to reduce the house edge from 6.67% to 4% on these bets.

Casino

A place of business that houses a selection of gambling activities involving licensed games where players can wager on the outcome of the those games for potential profit.

Chips

A term for tokens issued by the casino used instead for money.

Cold Dice

Dice that do not pass.

Color Change

The changing of chips into smaller or larger denominations.

Come Bet

A bet placed after the come-out roll that the dice will pass.

Come Box

The craps layout area where the come bet is placed.

Come Out Roll

The first roll of the dice is called the come out roll.

Coming Out

A term used to let players know that a come out roll is about to happen.

Craps Out

A term used for rolling a 2, 3 or 12 on the come out roll. A loser for pass line bettors.

Craps

A term used for the numbers 2, 3 or 12 and is also the name of the game.

Crew

The employees that staff the craps table, these include two dealers, a boxman and stickman.

Dealer

The dealers at each end of the craps table who handle all bets and transactions on behalf of the player.

Dice

Two cube dies, which are marked on all sides with a number of dots from 1 to 6, when thrown the combination of numbers determines a win or lose outcome at the craps table.

Die

Refers to the singular form of two dice, one cube marked on all sides with number of dots from 1 to 6.

Don't Come Box

Refers to the area on the table layout where a don't come bet is made.

Don't Come Bet

A bet against the dice, placed after the come out roll.

Don't Pass Bet

A bet against the dice, made on the come out roll that the dice will not pass.

Easy Way

The roll of a 4, 6, 8, or 10 in which the dice are not matched pairs but other combinations, such as 1-3 (4) etc.

Even Money

A pay-off of 1-1, thus the expression even money.

Floorman

A casino supervisors who stand behind the craps table watching over the game, the players and the employees.

Free Odds Bet

A bet made after the point has been established, on either the pass line, don't pass line, come and don't come wagers which is paid at true odds, ie: there is no house advantage.

Gambling

Is an action a player takes when he risks an amount of money against the casino or game for a desired outcome.

Game

The dictionary term for 'game' means a contrived and structured recreational activity, the game of craps is played on a table layout, players can wager on the different numbers or positions on the table layout, the rules of craps are quite complex however the game that once was only for the higher class and nobility has now become the favourite for all gamblers worldwide.

Hardway

The opposite to easy way, four hardway combinations, 2&2, 3&3, 4&4, 5&5, you bet to win that your matched combination will come up before a 7 is rolled. Hard 4 and 10 pay 8:1 and Hard 6 and 8 pay 10:1.

Hardway Bet

A bet that the matched dice combination (a pair) of either 4, 6, 8, or 10 coming up before a 7 is rolled or the easy way.

High Roller

A player who places large sum bets at the craps table.

Horn Bet

A one roll bet on a combination of 2, 3, 11 & 12. A roll of 3 and 11 pay 15:1 and 2 and 12 pay 30:1.

House Edge

Refers to the advantage that a casino has over a player.

Lay The Odds

Generally to wager more money on a proposition that you can win.

Layout

Referring to the imprint that shows all bets that can be made in the craps game within those areas.

Loaded Dice

A dice that has been tampered with so that it affects the roll of the dice and thus the resulting combinations.

Marker

A signed credit note or slip, (IOU) in which stipulates money owned by the player for the purpose of continuing or commencing a wager and is held by the casino until the marker is paid.

Midnight

A bet that the number 12 will appear on the next roll.

Natural

A term used for a 7 or 11 that is thrown on the come out roll.

Odds

Refers to the probability of an event (in craps the outcome of a dice throw) occurring.

Off

A call by a player than his bet(s) will not be working on the next roll of the dice.

On

A call by a player than his bet(s) will be working on the next roll of the dice.

On The Stick

A term that refers to a particular dealer will now be working as a stickman for a period of time.

One Roll Bet

A wager on the outcome of the next throw of the dice.

Pass Line

Refers to the area on the pass line layout on the craps board where pass line bets are placed.

Pass Line Bet

A wager on the pass line that an dice outcome will be reached, one bets are placed on the pass line they cannot be removed until a win or lose outcome has occurred.

Payoff

(1) Refers to the dealer paying out the player the winnings of bet. (2) The player cashing out his chips with the casino.

Pit Boss

An employee of the casino whom is responsible for all the tables in a given area of the casino.

Place Bet

The place numbers are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 which are the box numbers in the layout area of the board.

Player

A term used to described a person who places bets (gambles) in casino or card room.

Point

Refers to the position the puck is placed after the outcome of the come out roll has occurred, depending which box number has been rolled establishes the point.

Press

The increasing of a bet by double.

Proposition Bets

Refers to bets located in the center of the craps board layout.

Puck

A round item white on one side and black on the other which is used to mark the point by the dealer after the come out roll.

Rails

Refers to the grooved area of the craps table where players chips are kept when they are not in play.

Roll

Refers to both as a single throw of the dice and the completion of a series of rolls in which the shooter sevens out.

Seven Out

When the shooter throws a 7 after a point has already been established, thus ending his roll and losing with the dice.

Shoot

A term used to described the series of rolls that a shooter throws before a seven out.

Shooter

A shooter is a player designated to roll the dice and who throws determines wins and loses for all players at the craps table.

Snake Eyes

A slang term used when referring to the number 2.

Stickman

A stickman is an employee of the casino who calls the game, handles the stick and returns the dice to the shooter.

Take The Odds

A free odds bet as a right bettor that offers better than equal money on a winning bet.

Toke

A term that dealers use when referring to a tip given to a dealer by a player.

True Odds

Refers to the chance (odds) that a given number will be rolled on any single roll of the dice.

Wager

Also referred to as a bet is used to described the action of a player that places his chips down on a layout number, betting against the dice for a desired outcome.

Working

A casino term to signify that all bets are on and the next roll of the dice is coming out.

Wrong Bettor

A player who wagers a don't pass bet is betting against the dice.

Yo Eleven

A slang term betting that the next roll with be the sum total of eleven.
